Summary

This program presents a portion of coverage of the 1994 XVII Olympic Winter Games from Lillehammer, Norway. Highlights of this portion include: Anchor sports commentators Greg Gumbel and Andrea Joyce preside throughout this portion, while introducing each segment of the Opening ceremony. The program begins with the official introduction of the 1994 XVII Olympic Winter Games: the Parade of Nations. During this portion, Gumbel and Joyce comment on various athletes. Sports commentator James Brown interviews gold medalist for women's mogul skiing Donna Weinbrecht (USA); they discuss her knee injury, subsequent training and therapy to prepare for the 1994 Winter Olympic Games. The president of the International Olympic Committee, Juan Antonio Samaranch, invites everyone to participate in a moment of silence to honor the city of Sarajevo. He thanks King Harald V of Norway, other government officials, as well as the people of Norway and welcomes the athletes from around the world. The XVII Olympic Winter Games are officially opened by King Harald V. The Olympic Fanfare presents the introduction of the Olympic Flag. Reporter Ed Bradley comments on the camaraderie and support from the crowd. Reporter Charles Kuralt informs that there are 15 new flags that have never been seen before in the Winter Olympic Games. Norwegian singer Sissel Kyrkjebo, sings the Olympic Hymn. Gumbel and Joyce describe the significance of the ancient Nordic mythical figures that are depicted in the performance. Gumbel introduces alpine skier Picabo Street (USA) and freestyler Kris Feddersen (USA). The program concludes with Kuralt reflecting on the unity felt amongst the nations of the world.
