SEINFELD: THE DOORMAN (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series set in New York City in which comedian Jerry Seinfeld plays himself. Humorous situations in his personal life are interspersed with brief stand-up comedy routines. In this episode, Jerry chats onstage about a recent citywide doorman strike. He then goes to pick up Elaine, who is apartment-sitting for Mr. Pitt, only to encounter a confrontational doorman who immediately antagonizes him. When he gets upstairs, Jerry tells Elaine that the man is "very peculiar" and refuses to leave until his shift ends, but Mr. Pitt calls and she is forced to miss their movie anyway. Later, Jerry runs into the same man at his own building and ends up having to defend himself again. Elsewhere, Kramer fake-mugs George in front of some tourists so they will have an authentic NYC story to tell, and then goes to George's apartment, where his father Frank is staying with him during his separation from his wife Estelle. George gets an eyeful when Frank changes his shirt and later tells Jerry that his father has a rather womanly chest, fretting that the condition may be genetic. Kramer, however, gets an idea for some kind of male undergarment and starts planning. Elaine tells Jerry that the doorman complained about him, and Jerry swears the man is playing "mind games." When Jerry returns to the building at a later hour, he finds the man there again and tries to make amends. In response, the man asks him to watch the door for a brief moment, and Jerry finds the job more challenging than he previously thought. He signs for a package and eventually abandons the post when the man does not return. Later, he finds out that someone stole the couch from the building lobby while the door was unmanned.
Kramer goes to George's apartment and returns Frank's hi-fi, and then shows him his "supportive" invention, which he calls "the bro." George tries to ask Estelle about his grandmother's measurements, which she finds odd, especially when she walks in on Kramer and Frank trying out the "bro." Frank likes the invention, suggesting the new name of "the manssiere," but George is disturbed by their antics. Jerry wonders if the doorman set him up and Elaine hurriedly comes up with a cover story, not wanting to get in trouble with Mr. Pitt. When confronted, however, she admits that Jerry was watching the door at the time of the theft, and Jerry grumbles that the man is probably laughing about it with "his doorman buddies." George suggests that Jerry take his secondhand couch to replace the stolen one, causing Frank to leave when he has nowhere to sleep. Kramer and Frank hawk their invention to Sid, a bra salesman, and he likes the idea, though he gets into hot water with Frank when he mentions his interest in Estelle. George happily sends Frank packing back to his wife, though Frank is mad that he has been sleeping on a "used" couch, and when Estelle arrives, she reveals that she is indeed going out with Sid, and Frank angrily refuses to leave. The same tourists see Kramer on the street with Frank's hi-fi and pursue the "thief," though he distracts them with the "bro." Jerry delivers the replacement couch and then runs into his old friend Poppie, who becomes agitated when he sees the troublesome Elaine—and immediately sits on the urine-stained sofa. Back at home, Frank shares his son's small bed for the night, much to George's consternation. Commercials deleted.
