NYPD BLUE: HEARTS AND SOULS (TV)

Summary

One in this series of rough-edged police dramas about the cases and private lives of the detectives and station house personnel of a Manhattan precinct. In this two-part episode, the detectives wait anxiously for news as Simone slowly recovers from his heart transplant, though Russell notices that his incision site looks suspicious. A worried Sipowicz returns to the precinct and is surprised by a visit from his ex-wife Katie, whom he realizes has been drinking, and she admits that she was arrested in New Jersey on a DUI and needs his help. At the same time, a Mitchell Wolf arrives and asks to press charges against one of his tenants for a petty squabble, and Medavoy quickly grows annoyed with his haughty attitude. Sipowicz attempts to contact the Secaucus D.A., sure that Katie's actions stem from her grief over their son, though Katie then disappears from the precinct. Back at the hospital, Russell is upset to learn that Simone has developed an aggressive infection, and he soon experiences a seizure. Costas tells Sipowicz that the D.A. has agreed to drop the DUI if Katie enters a diversionary program, and he tearfully confides in Costas about his fear of losing his close friend right on the heels of his family tragedy.

Dr. Swan tells Russell that Simone has developed an abscess in his brain and requires a neurosurgeon, though Russell remains determined to consult with Dr. Carreras. A worried Irvin arrives at the precinct with early Christmas gifts, and Sipowicz finds an intoxicated Katie at a bar and sadly takes her home. Carreras visits a delirious Simone and then advises Russell to wait twenty-four hours before operating on the abscess to give him a chance to respond to the antibiotics, though warns her that this is unlikely because of the transplant immunosuppressives and urges her to simply "be with him." Simone, who is beginning to slip away, imagines a rooftop conversation with Patsy, who advises him to avoid self-pity, and Russell, after assuring Simone that he can stop fighting if he chooses to, declines the neurosurgeon. Swan quickly deduces that she is acting on Carreras' advice and argues with the other doctor, stating that the brain surgery may give Simone extra time, though Carreras coldly guesses that he merely wants to protect the hospital's cardiac statistics by allowing Simone to die under a neurologist's care.

Andy talks with Katie, guessing that she is suffering because she "ran out of people to care for," and suggests that they attend alcohol-treatment meetings together. Medavoy is angered when Mitchell returns with another complaint and argues heatedly with the man, and everyone is greatly saddened when Fancy reports that Russell has asked them to come to the hospital and say goodbye to their friend while they have the chance. A priest administers Simone's last rites, and Patsy lists the many good deeds Simone has done both on and off the job as his friends arrive to say their farewells. He has a loving vision of his and Russell's unborn child, and Sipowicz quietly promises to look out for Russell. Simone, seemingly at peace, dies with Russell by his side. Includes commercials and promos.
