DREW CAREY SHOW, THE: STEVE AND MIMI GET MARRIED (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedies starring stand-up comedian Drew Carey as a single guy who attempts to juggle his romantic endeavors and his menial job at a Cleveland department store, while still maintaining his sense of humor. Steve and Mimi are getting married, although Drew is highly uncomfortable with this. Steve resents Drew’s antipathy towards Mimi and Drew tries to be happy for him. Steve becomes convinced that Drew is deliberately trying to ruin his wedding day. They argue until they learn about their great-uncle Alfred’s death, which brings them closer together and reaffirms Steve’s decision to have Drew act as his best man. After Alfred’s wake, Drew’s mother indicates that she knows that Drew and Kate are dating despite their efforts to conceal it from her. Drew’s mother has Alfred’s casket delivered to the house, as it was his wish to be buried in the backyard, although it would be illegal to do so. She convinces them to do it anyway, and that they have to do it that night so it can get done before the wedding. However, the cold weather has frozen the ground and made it impossible to dig, and after several hours Drew, Oswald, and Lewis head inside to warm up, concealing the casket to avoid attracting suspicion. However, they end up falling asleep until the following morning, when they find that the casket has inadvertently been set up as a table for the appetizers at Steve’s wedding reception. They decide not to tell anyone about it for the time being and do their best to keep the guests away from the table. However, the casket is accidentally revealed, horrifying the guests. Steve again accuses Drew of trying to ruin his wedding and locks himself in the bathroom. Drew, Mimi, and both of their mothers attempt to convince Steve to come out, and Drew apologizes, asking Steve not to take out his anger on Mimi. Steve emerges and agrees to go forward with it, but the priest leaves, forcing them to find another one on short notice. Drew manages to salvage the wedding by getting hold of a reverend from an “instant wedding” website. He uses this to perform the ceremony and adds a sincere personal aside wishing both Steve and Mimi the best despite his enmity towards her. The wedding guests all chip in during the wedding party to bury Alfred. Includes commercials.
