AMEN: I CAN'T HELP LOVING THAT MAN OF MINE (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy television series about a dishonest church deacon and his relatives and friends.
Reverend Gregory is visited by Maxine, an old friend of his from school. Thelma is immediately jealous and confrontational in front of Maxine. Maxine asks Reverend Gregory out to dinner, but Deacon Frye quickly concocts an excuse to prevent him from doing so, claiming that Thelma is hosting dinner that night. Everyone else goes along with this alibi; in private Reverend Gregory speaks to Maxine, and he is still upset over her abruptly abandoning him at the altar five years beforehand. She tries to ask him out to dinner anyway to give herself the chance to explain, but he declines. As Thelma prepares dinner, she tells her father that she resents the implication that he feels that Reverend Gregory would be tempted to go out with Maxine. Deacon Frye has Cassietta and Amelia spy on Maxine, but Thelma insists that she does not need any help to keep Reverend Gregory from cheating on her. Thelma tells Reverend Gregory that she has no problem with him having dinner with Maxine and insists that he go.
Maxine surprises Reverend Gregory by arriving at his house, explaining that she wanted to spend time alone with him. He politely asks if they can go to a restaurant together, but she comes on to him and kisses him. Reverend Gregory does his best to resist her advances and attempts to get her to leave his house, but finds Rolly at the door waiting to go to Thelma’s dinner with him. Reverend Gregory tries to get him away as Maxine strips down to her undergarments behind his door. Once Rolly leaves she again tries to seduce Reverend Gregory, and he demands that she leave. She forces the issue by throwing her clothes out his window. Meanwhile, Deacon Frye, Cassietta, and Amelia are subjected to Thelma’s disastrous cooking. Thelma tries to remain calm but is clearly perturbed about Reverend Gregory and Maxine having dinner together. Rolly arrives with Maxine’s clothing, which he found just outside of his house. Everyone assumes that an illicit affair occurred between Reverend Gregory and Maxine, and try their best not to alert Thelma. However, Thelma soon realizes the implications and storms off to confront Reverend Gregory herself.
Reverend Gregory finally becomes frustrated by Maxine’s efforts and tells her in no uncertain terms that he has no romantic feelings for her and that Thelma is the only woman in his life. Thelma walks in on them, furious at both of them, as Reverend Gregory attempts to explain himself. Once Thelma learns about Maxine leaving Reverend Gregory at the altar, her attitude swiftly changes and she thanks Maxine profusely. Commercials deleted.
