LAVERNE & SHIRLEY: FRIENDLY PERSUASION (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about two young working women, following their humorous adventures from the 1950s through the 1960s.
In this episode, Mr. Pennington tells Laverne and Shirley that “a very important customer” will be needing their skills in the wrapping department. Soon, Charles Grodin – Mr. Pennington’s cousin -- comes in, with Laverne and Shirley both commenting on how much they admire his acting abilities. Afterward, Charles tells Mr. Pennington that he’d get more results from his employees at Bardwell’s, particularly the girls, if they’re treated with kindness. Mr. Pennington gets Charles to try out the policy on Laverne and Shirley. Charles then tells the gals that he’ll come by their apartment that night to talk about their jobs. After Charles leaves, Laverne tells Shirley that she thinks Charles is interested in her romantically; Shirley thinks he’s after their jobs since he used to work in customer services.
At the apartment, Carmine and Rhonda drop by, as do Lenny and Squiggy. The girls are arguing with the boys as Charles arrives. Charles sits with the group, making awkward conversation. When Shirley confronts Charles about his intentions, he assures her that he doesn’t want their jobs. To prove a point, Charles blows up at everyone in the room. He then contrasts the behavior with the benefits of friendliness and “being nice.” When Charles later tries to explain that he didn’t intend to lead on Laverne, he’s asked to leave. After he’s gone, everyone realizes that Charles was right about trying to show respect for others. When Charles returns to make a final point, all make amends and commend Charles for his efforts. Commercials deleted.
