Summary
One in this comedy series about Mary Richards, a single career woman working in a television newsroom.
In this episode, Mary is surprised by a visit from Sherry Ferris, a "lady of the evening" and Mary's former cellmate from her sole night spent in jail. Sherry admits that she has gotten into trouble again and asks Mary to speak for her in court, as she is an "upstanding citizen." Mary assures the judge that she will "keep an eye" on Sherry and help her to find gainful employment. Sherry seems certain that she will never land a legitimate job. Mary, however, remains determined to keep her word. At the office, Murray is amused when Ted announces that he is set to receive an honorary college degree. When Sherry stops by to job hunt with Mary, Georgette offers her a position at her rental-car business.
Mary dismisses Lou's concerns that the worldly and cynical Sherry will prove to be a "bad influence" on her, but Sherry soon tells Mary that she is quitting her disappointing new job. Later, Mary urges Sherry to consider her secret lifelong dreams; Sherry admits that she has always enjoyed designing clothes. She soon arrives at Mary's apartment with a handmade dress and asks Mary to try it on. Only Ted, visiting to show off his new academic degree, is pleased with the tacky and revealing design. Mary forces herself to tell Sherry the truth about her lack of talent, but Sherry reveals that she has already been hired by a fashion company. Lou then stops by, and Mary amuses herself by shocking him with her attire. Commercials deleted.
