CHEERS: CHEERIO CHEERS (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a group of regulars at a Boston bar.
Frasier comes to visit, announcing to Diane that he’s been chosen to be the visiting scholar at the University of Bologna. He hopes to take Diane with him so that they can spend time traveling around Europe together. However, Diane is reluctant to accompany him, particularly since she’s worried about hurting Sam’s feelings. They break the news to him together; Sam outwardly seems happy for them but Frasier speaks to him in private. He tells Sam about Diane’s reluctance to go with him due to her lingering feelings for Sam, and Sam believes it’s because Diane has a habit of overanalyzing every situation she’s in. However, Sam reassures Frasier that Diane will warm up to the idea soon. Sure enough, Diane enters and says she’s considered his offer and is willing to go with him. However, after Frasier leaves she insults Sam, whom she believes wants her to go to Europe as a means of sabotaging her relationship with Frasier. However, Sam replies that he genuinely wants to see Diane and Frasier happy together, and she believes him.
Sam throws a going-away party for Diane and Frasier, aware that they may never be back. Everyone says their goodbyes to Diane until only she and Sam are left in the bar. They say personal goodbyes to each other, thankful that their time together is ending relatively peacefully. He thanks her for returning to Cheers, saying it helped him through his spate of alcoholism. Sam asks for a goodbye hug, and proves to be literally unwilling to let go. Diane is also unwilling to leave Sam, and they end up passionately kissing, and they decide to go back to Sam’s place together, but Diane suddenly has second thoughts and realizes that she would be “insane” to give up her relationship with Frasier in favor of Sam. She goes to leave, but Sam offers her an ultimatum: a safe, comfortable life with Frasier, or a life taken “one day at a time” with him. The next day, Sam gets a call from Diane from a hotel room in London, asking if they can still be friends despite what happened the previous night. Sam says that they cannot, and they hang up on an uncertain note. Commercials deleted.
