CHEERS: BAR BET (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a group of regulars at a Boston bar. In this episode, Diane helps Norm and Cliff with a "literary inquiry," and Sam is confused when a strange man arrives at the bar claiming to know him. When Sam finally asks, he reveals that his name is Eddie Gordon and that Sam made a drunken bet with him that he could marry the glamorous Jacqueline Bisset or hand over ownership of his bar. He adds that the bet runs out on the following day and that he has it in writing, though Tom assures him that it is not legally binding. Sam frets that he cannot go to court, however, having already been sufficiently embarrassed in the press over the loss of his sports career, and Carla suggests that he find another woman of the same name and marry her and then quickly divorce her instead, as the "contract" does not specifically stipulate that he must wed the famous actress. Sam and the others pore over phone books, and Cliff finally finds a young, single Jacqueline Bisset from another state, and convinces her that she has won a trip to Boston with lots of perks.
Jacqueline arrives and Sam explains his dilemma, but she declares that she cannot marry a complete stranger, even briefly. Carla assures her that Sam is a decent guy, however, and he offers to show her the sights of Boston. Jacqueline is charmed by their day together, and though she admits that she always expected her wedding to be "special," agrees to marry Sam after all. Norm reveals that he is in fact certified to perform weddings, but the real minister soon arrives, as does Eddie. Sam smugly tells him that he is about to win the bet, and Eddie offers to "settle" instead, but Sam refuses his offer of a cash payout or free drinks for life, and Eddie finally leaves, defeated. Diane breaks the "bad" news to Jacqueline, who seems relieved, telling Diane that she was not attracted to Sam and found him exceedingly arrogant. Diane agrees that only "pathetic wretches" would ever date Sam, deciding not to admit that she was once one of them. Commercials deleted.
