REAL WORLD, THE: CHICAGO: THE DAY THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING (TV)
Summary
The eleventh season of this reality-based series about the exploits of seven strangers chosen by MTV to share rent-free lodging in Chicago and to be followed around by camera crews for several months.
In this episode, on the eve of her twentieth birthday, Aneesa is exasperated when Tonya continues hogging the phone to have long conversations with Justin. Kyle tells Chris about his ongoing feelings for his ex-girlfriend Nicole, who is back in New York; in the morning, everyone is horrified by news of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The seven housemates gather around to watch the news together, and Kyle receives a call from his sister Ashley from downtown Manhattan. Theo marvels at the bravery of the policemen and firefighters on the scene, and the others reflect on the meaning of terrorism and faith. Kyle desperately tries to contact Nicole and is deeply relieved to finally reach her on the phone, realizing that their minor problems seem meaningless in the wake of such tragedy.
Kyle observes that the airplane-themed art in the house now seems bitterly ironic, and he and the others discuss the disturbing efficiency of the attack and the likelihood of war. Aneesa realizes that her birthday will forever be associated with tragedy, and her conflict with Tonya over the telephone increases as they both attempt to contact their families. Later, however, Tonya apologizes for her behavior, and the housemates pray together and share a group hug. On the fourteenth, they all attend a ceremony at Daley Plaza, and Keri purchases candles and American flags for the National Day of Prayer. The housemates meet and bond with their neighbors as they gather outside their homes. Tonya is touched when Aneesa and the others bring a candle and a flag to the restaurant where she works so that she will feel included. Aneesa concludes that their fight was "not worth it," and the housemates resolve to get through the experience together. Commercials deleted.
