SIX FEET UNDER: THAT'S MY DOG (TV)
Summary
One in this series about the Fisher clan, a loving -- if dysfunctional -- family struggling to maintain a sense of normalcy in the face of the stressful day-to-day operations of the eccentric family business, a funeral home in Los Angeles. In this episode, Anne Marie Thornton dies on her own wedding anniversary after falling in the shower, and David worries that Keith will meet someone new while on tour with Celeste for three months, though Keith urges him to be less insecure. Ruth recommends a bereavement group for Nate, revealing that she attended one after Nathaniel's death, and she later ponders setting George's son Kyle up with her friend Becky. David and Rico attempt to comfort Lou, Anne Marie's husband, who feels that he is being punished by God, and Russell praises Claire's self-portraits during her crit, though Professor Pope notes that they seem to portray emptiness rather than "stillness." David's discomfort about his parting from Keith increases when Keith calls from Celeste's jet and feigns talking to a woman, and Rico is upset when Sophia unexpectedly shows up stoned at the funeral home in search of him, though Nate is unconcerned by his affair.
Margaret visits Brenda on campus and assures her that she will be an excellent psychiatrist, giving her personal experience with mental illness and destructive behavior. When Brenda tells her of her stable, healthy relationship with Joe, however, Margaret immediately declares that she should break up with him, as sex should be emotional rather than "cerebral." David picks up a stranded motorist, Jake, and gallantly buys a can of gas for him, while elsewhere George informs Ruth that he is "disappointed in her" for trying to arrange a fix-up dinner for Kyle and Becky. Nate attends the bereavement group, populated mostly by elderly widows and widowers, and he explains that he feels "terrified" by his lonely life with Maya, but is then interrupted by the fire alarm. David chats pleasantly with Jake, but Jake suddenly pulls a gun and demands David's money. He forces him to drive through the city, and David tries to appeal to his humanity by talking about Nathaniel's death when Jake tells the story of his own father's grisly demise in a car accident, though Jake later admits that he invented the tale. Jake is disgusted to realize that there is a corpse in the back of the van and callously throws the body on the side of the road. He ties David up, though David escapes and makes a run for it, but Jake catches him just before he can flag down a passing cop car and forces him to "apologize" for escaping.
David demands to know why Jake is tormenting him, though Jake points out that the reason hardly matters, and after a trip to MacArthur Park, he forces David to smoke crack with him and then orders him to drive to Long Beach. David experiences strange and overwhelming effects from the drugs, and Jake spots a dog that he is sure is his own pet, though he changes his mind once David catches the animal. Jake beats David badly and decides to "end it" by finally killing him, but as David thinks back to all the most memorable moments of his life, Jake drives away in the van and leaves him there alone. Shaken and battered, David is eventually picked up on the road by the police.
