SIX FEET UNDER: TERROR STARTS AT HOME (TV)

Summary

One in this series about the Fisher clan, a loving -- if dysfunctional -- family struggling to maintain a sense of normalcy in the face of the stressful day-to-day operations of the eccentric family business, a funeral home in Los Angeles. In this episode, Robert Meinhardt is murdered during a home-invasion robbery, and David prepares to head back to work after his carjacking and assault. Keith, having returned from Celeste's tour, urges him to tell his family the full truth of the attack, but he declares that he is fine and does not wish to call off his birthday party. Nate, tired of dealing with "people in pain," applies for a job at a canine retreat, and Ruth questions David about his attack, wondering why he was badly hurt if he gave in to the man's demands. Joe tells Brenda that he has found an ideal home for them, and David guesses that Robert committed suicide after talking to the widow. Rico calls Sophia and lies that he has to work that night, while elsewhere Anita moves into the carriage house with Claire. Edie praises Claire's "apocalyptic" photos, but Claire feels that they lack significance, and the girls discuss creating an "unavoidable" mixed-media art project together.

Ruth attends a faculty party with George and overhears other women talking about their short-term affairs with him, though he brushes it off and states that he cannot remember his reasons for the breakups. Rico hastily covers when he realizes that he accidentally telephoned Vanessa instead, and Nate bonds with his co-worker, aspiring vet Maile, and says only that he is not married "anymore." Jimmy and Russell join the girls at Claire's house, but they are more interested in trying Jimmy's "groovier" form of ecstasy than in discussing the art project. Joe shows Brenda the idyllic house, and they discuss their plans for domestic bliss before making another attempt at conceiving a child. Ruth prepares for David's party as Claire and her friends give in to their intoxicated impulses, and Keith speaks fondly about Celeste at the dinner table, suggesting that there is depth to her music. Nate tells the others about his relaxing new job, which seems to irk David, and Claire arrives late and, still high, offers some bizarrely honest commentary. In the kitchen, Ruth unwittingly tells Vanessa about Rico's "outgoing friend" Sophia, and George gives David a neti pot as a present, causing Ruth to overreact about George's "nasty little secrets." The party breaks up on a sour note, though Claire tells her friends that it was "kind of amazing," and she and Edie seem to flirt as Claire photographs her in the grass outside.

Keith is summoned back to Celeste's tour and David urges him to go, not wanting him to lose his job out of concern for him. At Robert's funeral, however, David learns that his death was actually a homicide, and he experiences a panic attack as he flashes back to Jake's violent abuse. Brenda begins to doubt her plans with Joe while out shopping for bedding, and David finally confesses the full story of his attack to a sympathetic Claire, explaining that he felt unprepared for death despite his career experience and forgot to pray in the moment. Claire then urges Nate to return to work at the funeral home, hinting that David cannot "deal" on his own, though Nate seems resentful. George scolds Ruth for embarrassing him at dinner, stating that the past is not important to him, and when she demands answers about his many marriages and history of womanizing, he retorts that they all "asked too many questions." Rico tells Vanessa that Sophia is a single mother from church whom he is "helping," having decided during her depression to aid those worse off than they, though she does not appear entirely convinced. Brenda visits Nate and tells him that she cannot change her ways and be content with a conventional home life, and the two kiss.
