SIX FEET UNDER: SINGING FOR OUR LIVES (TV)

Summary

One in this series about the Fisher clan, a loving -- if dysfunctional -- family struggling to maintain a sense of normalcy in the face of the stressful day-to-day operations of the eccentric family business, a funeral home in Los Angeles. In this episode, Pilar Sandoval is killed in a roller-blading accident, and at a sonogram appointment, Brenda tells Jackie that Nate has asked her to attend Quaker Meeting with him, feeling that they are "a hundred miles apart" in their marriage. Ruth prepares to babysit for Anthony and Durrell for the first time, and Rico is annoyed when Nate tries out his rusty Spanish on Pilar's parents and he opts to handle the intake himself. When Nate observes that he has sold them several expensive products, Rico pointedly informs him that elaborate funerals are customary in Latino culture. David visits a crematory, and Claire runs into Anita while on the office coffee run and awkwardly accepts an invitation to her latest art show. Nate is annoyed to hear that Brenda had the sonogram without him, though she tells him that no irregularities were found and that they are having a girl. David is stunned to spot Durrell on a joyride in Keith's car and lectures Ruth for not minding the boys more carefully, and Brenda is uncomfortable through Meeting for Worship, though Nate seems to enjoy the experience.

Vanessa heads out for the night with her sister and friends, testily reminding Rico that the boys' dinner is his responsibility, and when Nate asks Brenda to attend another Meeting, she reminds him that she finds religion "ridiculous" and adds that he is distancing himself from her and the baby to spend time with Maggie instead. Ted asks Claire about her unusual car and then offers to accompany her to the art show if she joins him for an evening out with his old fraternity brothers. David tells Nate and Rico his idea about buying the crematory, but Rico states that they should instead market more heavily towards their Latino clientele and Nate argues that they should start offering "green funerals." Ruth visits Hiram's salon and ends up spending the evening with him, and while out at a bar, Ted realizes that he has little in common with his old college pals anymore. Keith confronts Durrell about his dangerous antics, and Durrell reacts furiously and grabs a knife. Claire and Ted encounter Russell at the art show, and when Anita reveals that Russell is now pining for Jimmy after a drunken hook-up, Claire admits that her friends' dating past is "confusing." Rico works on Pilar, who assures him that she, unlike Vanessa, would forgive him any transgressions were they a couple, and Claire banters with Olivier, who assures her that she is allowed a "fallow period" with her art. She makes peace with Russell over the collage photos, though he and Jimmy then get into a fight over Jimmy's latest work.

Keith hides the rest of their cutlery, sure that Durrell is a danger to them all, and Ruth and Hiram spend the night together and then impulsively head off on a camping trip. Jackie grows exasperated with Brenda's complaints about Nate and tells her to make active changes in her relationship, and when Keith realizes that the boys fully expect to be "given back," he suggests some ideas for family vacations to assure them that they now have a permanent home. Rico takes charge at Pilar's funeral, and after their enjoyable evening out, Ted kisses Claire at work. Nate confides in Maggie about his career doubts and fears for his unborn daughter's health, and the two end up sleeping together as Brenda waits alone at the Meetinghouse. Rico finally confronts Vanessa about their unhappy relationship, and she admits that she cannot let go of her resentment over his affair despite her love for him. As Nate prepares to leave Maggie's, he suddenly complains of a "numb arm" and then collapses.
