LAW & ORDER {LAW AND ORDER}: CRIMINAL INTENT: PAS DE DEUX (TV)

Summary

The first of two assets on this tape. One in this series of dramas — a spin-off of "Law & Order" — that deals with the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of criminals, but with a slight twist: each episode begins from the criminal's point of view as the actual crime is committed. In this episode, one Donald DePalma meets shy Margie Timmons at a dance class and begins to romance her, convincing her to commit petty crimes for the excitement of it. Elsewhere, DePalma's associate Ernie Dominguez is caught robbing a bank — and he is killed when a bomb strapped to his chest then detonates. Goren and Eames guess that Dominguez pretended to have been forced into the crime in order to allow his ex to collect his life insurance after his death, but security footage from his other recent bank jobs suggests that fake bombs were used until the fateful last time.

Goren learns that his nemesis Nicole Wallace has been found not guilty of her crimes, and Margie soon becomes DePalma's new partner in crime and is thrilled when he promises to take her to Mexico after their next heist. The detectives track DePalma's movements to the dance studio, where Goren quickly identifies the vulnerable Margie as the new bank robber. Carver points out that they don't yet have enough evidence against her, so the detectives question Mr. Timmons, who is baffled to learn of his wife's new secret life of crime. False evidence planted in her car frames Margie as the sole bomb-maker driven to desperation by gambling debts, and the detectives scramble to figure out which bank is the next target. Goren catches a disguised Margie in the act as Eames nearly shoots DePalma, who is carrying only a starter pistol, and both are hauled in for questioning.

Margie tries to cover for DePalma, claiming that he's a "gentleman" who had nothing to do with her crimes. DePalma states that the two were merely having an affair, but Goren and Eames notice the lies and figure out that DePalma is dying of prostate cancer, which has rendered him impotent, and exploited her loneliness in order to have one last hurrah and then commit dual suicide by cop after the final robbery. A shocked Margie refuses to accept the truth, but Goren then reveals DePalma's true suicidal tendencies by observing that he pocketed several of the poisonous ammonia tablets used to make the bombs, though Carver isn't fooled by the detectives' trick. Commercials deleted.
