BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, THE: CHRISTMAS AT THE CLAMPETTS (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a family of dim-witted mountain people made suddenly rich by the discovery of oil on their property, and their new lives in a Beverly Hills mansion. In this episode, on Christmas, the family is excited by their large tree, though baffled by the fake snow underneath. They open several presents from the Drysdales, including wetsuits and a "washing machine," which is in fact a television, and which alarms Granny with its strangeness. Elly May prepares to give Mrs. Drysdale the "full-length mink" that she requested, though over at their home, Milburn gives Margaret a fur coat and then explains his "clever strategy" for keeping the Clampetts in California by giving them a number of aquatic-themed presents, including a boat with a chimpanzee skipper. The Clampetts are shocked to find the boat outside their home, believing that an incompetent seaman has landed there accidentally, and are further baffled by the strange-looking "sailor" aboard the vessel. The Drysdales drop by and explain about the boat, and Margaret is excited to hear that the Clampetts have a gift for her, believing it to be diamonds.

While Jethro gets to know the "sailor," Granny happily gives Margaret one of her signature "Christmas gift packs," featuring many unusual Southern-style snacks. Elly May then confesses that she lost Margaret's gift while playing with it, much to the woman's distress, and she searches frantically for the "Jim." When Milburn finds the Clampetts' dog sleeping on her new fur coat, he hides the "status symbol" to teach her a lesson, and the misunderstanding increases as she hunts for the mink as well. Meanwhile, the Clampetts examine their new boat and then hunt for water on which to sail it, finding that the "pitiful" concrete Los Angeles River is insufficient. Stymied, they return home, concluding that their holiday was a merry one despite the odd events of the day.
