GODSPELL GOES TO PLIMOTH PLANTATION (TV)
Summary
This program features the Boston company of the musical "Godspell" recreating the events surrounding the pilgrims' settlement in Plimoth Plantation, Massachusetts. Throughout the presentation, narrator Henry Steele Commager reads from the journal of William Bradford while the cast performs songs from "Godspell" on location at the historic site. Arriving on board a ship similar to the Mayflower, the cast sings "Bless the Lord" on sighting land. To simulate the hardships of the winter of 1620-1621, they sing "On the Willows," followed by "Day By Day" in recognition of the hopefulness of spring and the opportunities afforded by the pilgrims' new home. Representing discontent with the lack of daily comforts, the cast performs "Turn Back, O Man," and the first Thanksgiving is celebrated in song with "All Good Gifts." Signifying the future possibilities inherent in the settlement's small beginnings, the cast sings "By My Side," and closes the program with "Day By Day."
