JACKIE GLEASON AND HIS AMERICAN SCENE MAGAZINE {THE HONEYMOONERS} (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy/variety series featuring Jackie Gleason, with topical humor that satirizes current events. The program opens with a dance number by The June Taylor Dancers, followed by Gleason's monologue about a new fad on the American scene. The program includes a sketch of "The Honeymooners," based on the series of programs about Ralph Kramden, a blustery bus driver, his long-suffering wife Alice, and their neighbors, Ed and Trixie Norton. Guest star Art Carney reprises his role as Ed Norton, and Gleason reprises his role as Ralph Kramden. In this sketch, Ralph and Alice have a new television set, and Ed comes downstairs to watch a football game with Ralph. The television set goes blank at a crucial point during the game and Ed tries to help Ralph fix it. Musical highlights include Tony Bennett singing "From This Moment On" and "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." American Scene Magazine vignettes, introduced by Gleason, include a parody of Thanksgiving day dinner and the annual Thanksgiving day parade; Frank Fontaine littering in front of a police officer; juvenile delinquents hanging around the neighborhood; hazardous aspects of filming television commercials; and winners of the World Series. Gleason also makes an appearance as Joe the Bartender, with Fontaine as Crazy Guggenheim. Joe refuses to believe Guggenheim's assertion that he can sing anything, until he breaks into the song, "The More I See You"; additionally, Guggenheim's son, Chris, makes an appearance. As the show concludes, Gleason says that working with Carney gives him great pleasure, and he promotes Carney's Broadway show, "Take Her, She's Mine." Various segments of the show are introduced by the Glea-Girls. Includes commercials, a promo, and a public service announcement. Cataloging of this program was made possible by The Coca-Cola Company.
