HAVE GUN – WILL TRAVEL: ALICE (TV)

Summary

One in this series of western dramas about Paladin, a principled and cultured gun for hire.

In this episode, Paladin travels with Maya Ferguson to the town of Codyville to search for her long-lost mother Alice, also known as "Blue Dollar Alice," about whose dubious past she has many questions. Reverend Bigley informs Paladin that the town has reformed itself and no longer tolerates "that kind of woman," though reveals that Alice is at least "alive and safe." Paladin confronts the former Mr. Ferguson, now calling himself Eli Morgan, and accuses him of hiding his "shameful" marriage to Alice while taking advantage of her financially. It is revealed that Alice actually once hired Paladin to kill her unkind spouse.

The local women corner Maya with mean-spirited gossip, but Paladin explains that Alice "never did evil," but instead earned her nickname by running an honest saloon and showing only compassion to the unseemly and downtrodden men of the town. Morgan and his men attack Paladin, and Morgan himself rushes off with a shotgun, supposedly banned in Codyville. Alice then appears, revealing that Morgan has accidentally killed himself in his frantic attempt to murder her. She explains that she has been a virtual prisoner of Codyville because of the "memoirs" she has written – that is, her stories of the Codyville citizens' former sins – but is now free thanks to Paladin. She then finally reunites with her long-estranged daughter. Commercials deleted.
