EIGHT IS ENOUGH: THE BOYFRIEND (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedy/dramas about Sacramento newspaper columnist Tom Bradford, and his raucous, sometimes reckless family of eight children. In this episode, suspicions arise that Abby is having a love affair with her stepdaughter's boyfriend. As the show begins, Tom insists that his family conserve during the California water shortage, and he appoints young Nicholas household water monitor. When Susan has Martin, a graduate student whom she likes, over for a home-cooked meal, he and Abby become enthusiastic about a mutual passion: Martin is writing his dissertation on a teaching method that Abby has been using for ten years. As Martin and Abby leave the dinner table together, Susan becomes convinced that Abby is monopolizing her new love interest and grows increasingly jealous. Meanwhile, Nicholas becomes an overzealous household water conservationist, infuriating the Bradfords. In their daily meetings, Abby's data and Martin's theories are a perfect match for his project, but Tom feels threatened and worries that he and Abby are too far apart in age. Complications ensue when Susan decides to drop off Abby's research data at Martin's -- and spies a spiffily-dressed Abby and Martin driving off together. In the meantime, Tommy and his friend drill a hole into the girls' locker room with the intention of snapping illicit photos. When peeping Tommy gets caught, the principal notifies his older brother, David, who designs a punishment of his own. And, ultimately, Tom and Susan arrive separately at Martin's apartment, where each is ready to confront the research team about their perceived indiscretion. Commercials deleted.
