WALL STREET WEEK {WALL $TREET WEEK} WITH LOUIS RUKEYSER: LET'S GIVE THANKS TO LOU'S DAD (TV)

Summary

One in this series of stock market and financial analysis programs hosted by Louis Rukeyser. In this edition, Rukeyser welcomes four guests -- including his father, financial journalist Merryle S. Rukeyser -- to analyze financial news and economic trends. Rukeyser reviews the Dow Jones and the broader indices before introducing the following guests: Frank Cappiello, president of an investment advisory firm; Mary Farrell, vice president of a national brokerage firm; and Louis Holland, partner in an investment counseling firm. Rukeyser and the panel discuss current market news and trends, make predictions on future market activity, and give advice on which types of stocks and bonds to buy. Rukeyser then introduces 90-year-old Merryle Rukeyser. Rukeyser asks his father to compare the crash of 1929 -- during which he was a leading financial commentator -- with that of 1987. Merryle Rukeyser discusses the constancy of human nature and argues that the crash of 1929 did not cause the depression and that one should only take part in the stock market if one accepts and enjoys risk-taking. He remarks on the U.S.'s financial position as an international debtor, which he blames on the inability to recoup loans given to all European countries but Finland at the end of the two world wars. He argues for a renewed crusade for excellence before discussing New Deal Financing. Louis Rukeyser opens the discussion to the panel. In answer to Cappiello's question about an upcoming change in administration, Merryle Rukeyser suggests voting for business-oriented candidates instead of along party lines. Farrell mentions the elder Rukeyser's 1924 book "The Common Sense of Money and Investment." Holland asks about 1987's proposed tax and trade bills, and the similarities to conditions that preceded the 1929 crash. Rukeyser the younger asks his father for his opinions on mandatory retirement, Social Security, and Medicare.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by Elizabeth B. Dater in honor of Louis Rukeyser, 2003.
