AMERICAN PLAYHOUSE: GAL YOUNG'UN (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic anthology series. Based on the short story by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, this program concerns a lonely widow living in Florida during the prohibition. The woman falls for a charming bootlegger who is skilled with women but low on cash. Upon learning she is wealthy, the bootlegger convinces her to marry him, and he begins to teach her how to make whiskey. As the bootlegging business booms, he begins to leave home on business trips, and, because she is afraid he will leave her, she tolerates his aloof behavior and his extensive trips, which become more and more frequent. One day he brings a girl home with him, claiming she has nowhere else to stay. He begins taking the girl with him on his trips, and, when he begins leaving the girl behind as well, the widow plans her revenge. (This program received the Silver Hugo Award and an award for Best First Feature at the Chicago Film Festival.)
