AMERICAN PLAYHOUSE: A WALK IN THE WOODS (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic anthology series. Adapted for television and taped live before an audience at Broadway's Booth Theater, this play explores the intimate, human side behind the international stage of political events. The play is based on an actual event at the 1982 Geneva conference between the world's superpowers: an American negotiator and a Soviet diplomat shocked the media by leaving the closely monitored conference table to take an amiable stroll in the woods. While trying unsuccessfully to forge an alliance between two nations, the American negotiator, John Honeyman (Waterston), and the Soviet diplomat, Andrey Botvinnik (Prosky), develop a mutual trust and respect for one another, establishing a friendship that endures beyond the unpredictable and tumultuous arena of political affairs. The program is followed by an interview with the playwright, Lee Blessing.
