GREAT PERFORMANCES: BLACK AND BLUE (TV)
Summary
One in this series on the performing arts. In this program, director Robert Altman takes a look at the 1989 Broadway musical revue "Black and Blue" from in front of the stage and behind the scenes. During this program, performers are shown talking about the show backstage as well as commenting on how they feel as they exit the stage. This celebration of the black art forms of jazz, blues, and tap showcases the phenominal dancing of tap masters and the vocal artistry of legendary blues singers in performances of the following songs, among others: "After You've Gone"; "I Want a Big Butter and Egg Man; "I've Got a Right to Sing the Blues"; "Ain't Nobody's Business"; "Stormy Monday Blues"; "I'm All for You"; "Body and Soul"; "Am I Blue"; "I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby"; and "What Did I Do to be So Black and Blue?" Featured performers, among others, include: blues singers Ruth Brown, Linda Hopkins, and Carrie Smith; and "hoofers" Bunny Briggs, Lon Chaney, George Hillman, Bernard Manners, Jimmy Slyde, and Dianne Walker. Ingenious use of sets and costumes enable this revue to capture the era of the music used.
Cataloging of this program was made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
