DICK VAN DYKE SHOW, THE: SOL AND THE SPONSOR (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedy programs about the personal and professional life of Rob Petrie, the head comedy writer for television's "Alan Brady Show." In this episode, Rob and Laura are nervously preparing for a dinner party with Rob's sponsor, Mr. Bermont. But Rob's army buddy, Sol Pomeroy, stops by and hopes to stay with the Petries for the weekend. Laura and Rob are happy to have him as a guest but are concerned that Mr. Bermont and his wife will not appreciate Sol's vivacious personality. Rob casually mentions to Sol that holding a dinner party with an uneven number of guests can be awkward, believing that Sol will understand his hidden meaning. But instead of not attending the dinner party, Sol arranges to bring a date. While Sol goes to pick up his escort, Mr. and Mrs. Bermont arrive at the Petries' home. Rob and Laura quickly realize that they are in for a long and nerve-wracking evening, especially when Sol arrives with his unsophisticated date. Sol, who is a mechanic, and Mr. Bermont begin to argue about the quality of Bermont's automobile. They take their fight outside and Laura and Rob begin to panic, but they soon learn that their fears about the evening were completely unfounded. Commercials deleted.
