PHENOM: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The premiere in the comedy series about a fifteen-year-old girl trying to become a tennis pro while maintaining a "normal" lifestyle. In this episode, single mother Dianne drives daughter Angela home after the girl has just won the Southern California under-sixteen championship. Dianne arrives at her house to find younger daughter Mary Margaret having donated money to a televangelist. Dianne is angry that her teenage son Brian left Mary Margaret alone to go pick up his girlfriend, Roanne. Then, Angela receives a call from famed tennis coach Lou Del La Rosa, who wants to train her personally at his academy in La Jolla. The next night, Angela watches a video tape Lou has sent her in which he espouses his greatness as a tennis coach. Dianne isn't so sure about Lou's crazy methods and wants to keep her daughter at home. That night, Angela attends a party at her friend Tara's house. Tara encourages Angela to make a move on Jesse, a boy to whom Angela is attracted. However, Angela is so nervous she struggles to speak to her crush and refuses to join him upstairs. Returning home, Angela learns that her mother now will let her go to the California academy if she so wishes, even though it means moving. However, Angela thinks she still has some growing up to do and decides to stay at home. The next day, Lou arrives at the Doolan house, shocked that Angela will not be attending his academy and instantly clashing with Dianne. Lou offers some tips to Angela, trying to get her to come with him. Angela wonders if she can be both a great player and a normal kid. Finally, Lou swings a deal where he will get to train her on the weekends and she can be a schoolgirl during the week. Includes commercials.
