MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SCREENING SERIES, THE: STORYBOOK PLAYHOUSE 2: PACKAGE 3 {THE FISHERMAN AND HIS WIFE; RAMONA'S BAD DAY; FEELINGS}

Summary

Prepared for The Museum of Television & Radio screening series "Storybook Playhouse," this compilation of stories features works based upon the writings of the Brothers Grimm, Beverly Cleary, and Aliki. In the animated tale, "The Fisherman and His Wife," a fisherman catches a flounder that speaks. The fish explains that he is an enchanted prince and asks to be returned to the sea. The fisherman grants his request. When he returns home, the fisherman tells his wife what happened. She informs him that he should have wished for something and sends him back to the sea to ask the enchanted prince for a cottage. Reluctantly, the fisherman calls to the flounder, who instantly grants his wife's request. Two weeks later, the fisherman's wife is bored with her cottage and sends her husband back to the sea to ask for a castle. Once again, the fisherman reluctantly gets his wife what she wants. Over the next few days, the fisherman's wife demands more and more power. With each request the fisherman grows more certain that the magical fish will become angry with him and his wife. His fears are realized when his wife asks to have the powers of the Lord and is punished for her greed. In the second story, an episode of the PBS series "The Ramona Stories," a girl named Ramona suffers through a day of mishaps. At breakfast, every time she fixes herself a bowl of oatmeal someone in her family takes it. On the way to school, her lunch falls out of her lunchbox. In school, she cannot remember how to spell any of the words on her spelling test and, at lunch, her friends laugh at her leftover pot roast sandwich. After school, Ramona goes to her friend Howie's house and is forced to contend with his little sister, Willa-Jean, who makes Ramona play with her. Later, Ramona and Howie decide to play with a toy boat in a sink full of water. Ramona decides to add blue dye to the water to make it look more like an ocean, but succeeds only in dying her hands blue. When she gets home, her parents have a fight and Ramona becomes convinced that they will get divorced. The next morning she is relieved to see that her parents are no longer fighting and that her bad day is over. The third program is a "Reading Rainbow" episode covering the topic of feelings. Highlights of this program include the following: host LeVar Burton explains what feelings are; the animated story "Feelings" explores how feelings may be expressed by a child; a composer works with children to create a musical piece out of everyday sounds; Burton discusses how he copes when someone close to him dies; using sign language, Dr. Penny Patterson and Koko the Gorilla discuss the emotions Koko felt when her kitten died; a montage of photos of best friends; and children recommend books on feelings that they have read.
