STEPHEN KING'S THE STAND: PART 1: THE PLAGUE (TV)
Summary
Part one in this four-part drama based on Stephen King's best-selling novel about a deadly plague that escapes from a U.S. government lab, leaving only a chosen few survivors to take a stand against the forces of evil. In the opening episode, when a virus wipes out the population of a military base in California, the gatekeeper and his family manage to flee. In doing so, they spread the disease across much of the country before turning up dead in a town in Texas. The military immediately quarantines the town, taking all of the people who were at the site of the guard's death to a disease control center in Vermont. Concern over the curious flu-like virus spreads. The virus spreads as well to Arkansas, where a deaf mute named Nick Andros gets beaten up by three troublemakers who catch the virus while Nick himself manages to stay healthy; New York, where pop singer Larry Underwood watches his mother die; and Maine, where Fran Goldsmith tends to her sick father. All the while the government is denying the existence of what the media have dubbed the "super flu," and holding Stu Redman -- the only man seemingly immune -- for observation. With martial law declared, soldiers go around killing television crews, and even shoot radio personality Rae Flowers while she's on the air. When the entire staff of the contagious disease center starts dying, one of the ailing doctors decides that Stu doesn't deserve to live and goes after him with a gun. Stu, who keeps dreaming about a woman called Mother Abigail who wants him to go see her, kills the doctor, and escapes through corridors filled with dead bodies. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements. This program is closed-captioned.
