CRIME STORY: SHOCKWAVES (TV)

Summary

One in this serialized police drama -- set for the initial episodes in Chicago, then in Las Vegas, during the early 1960s -- which traces the intersecting lives of three men: Agent Mike Torello, the hard-boiled, hair-triggered leader of a Justice Department task force; Ray Luca, a ruthless gangster overseeing a vast criminal empire; and David Abrams, a tenacious U.S. Attorney. In this episode, the Organized Crime Task Force suffers a major setback when Luca "returns from the dead" and receives total immunity from the government, for whom he has arranged a lucrative arms-for-drugs deal with a Latin American cartel. Summoned to the office of Lt. Colonel Dance, Torello and Krychek are enraged to learn that Luca, after recuperating from a near-fatal nuclear blast, engineered an ingenious deal with the military whereby his criminal record was eradicated. Immune from prosecution, Luca sets about settling into a suburban lifestyle: mowing the lawn and shopping for groceries with his wife. As the initial shock wears off, Torello and the task force find themselves disillusioned, but more determined than ever to complete the objective of their assignment: the dismantlement of the Outfit. Abrams, on the other hand, takes it upon himself to shoulder the brunt of the responsibility for the travesty and agonizes over his idealistic visions of justice. Later, when a judge inexplicably grants Luca a restraining order against Torello, who had been stalking the gangster night and day, Abrams resigns and closes the book on his career. Drunk and despondent, Torello and his men hunch over the bar at a strip joint and make a mock toast to the "G" that has betrayed them. Meanwhile, Max Goldman and Steve Kordo, having prospered during Luca's absence, fear for their futures; Max seeks Manny's advice in mending his relationship with Luca while Kordo organizes a hit against the boss.
