60 MINUTES {OKLAHOMA CITY FEDERAL BUILDING BOMBING; CLINTON INTERVIEW} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of news magazine programs. In this edition, the correspondents focus on the tragic terrorist bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Reporters Mike Wallace, Ed Bradley, Steve Kroft, and Lesley Stahl perform an exclusive, live interview with President Bill Clinton about the bombing. Following the interview, Stahl investigates the Michigan Militia. Wallace also speaks with James Falks, the former head of the FBI in New York, and Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Penn.) about terrorism in the U.S. Topics discussed by President Clinton include the following: the status of the intense investigation into the bombing; how the judicial system will treat home-grown terrorists; whether a swift sentence, and possibly the death penalty, will be carried out effectively; what the U.S. public would need to forfeit in order to combat terrorism networks; whether rumors of closing down Pennsylvania Avenue to tourist traffic are true; the possible connection between the Oklahoma City bombing and the raid on the Branch Davidian building in Waco, Texas; ways to stop the dangerous activities of hundreds of militia groups across the country; ways to limit the sale of items that serve as ingredients for homemade bombs; the increasingly prevalent role of violence in society; terrorism experts' predictions about the potential rise of domestic terrorism; and whether the media romanticizes violence to a dangerous degree. In the next segment, "The Michigan Militia," Stahl spends a weekend with a militia group. Highlights include the following: the reason militia groups are training for a war against the U.S. government; the group's belief that the U.S. will soon be a totalitarian state; their response to allegations that suspects in the Oklahoma City bombing case are linked to the militia; and reasons the militia claimed the U.S. government planted the bomb at the federal building. In the next segment, "Can We Prevent Another One?," Wallace speaks with Falks and Senator Specter about the following topics: whether militias are a legitimate threat to the government; steps that can be taken to prevent another terrorist attack; whether domestic or foreign terrorism is more of a threat; and the failure of federal law enforcement agencies to detect militia groups' plans. As the program concludes, Andy Rooney comments on the way terrorism has driven society into a state of paranoia and the reason terrorists prefer it that way. Includes commercials and promos. This program is closed-captioned.
