KARAOKE: ONE {EPISODE #1} (TV)

Summary

Part one in this four-part miniseries, created by British television writer Dennis Potter, which investigates Potter's familiar obsessions with the confluence of art and life and the interplay between memory and fantasy, as it examines the strange occurrences happening to television writer Daniel Feeld. In part one, Feeld goes to the hospital for a check-up to determine the cause of the severe stomach pains which occasionally cause him to double over in agony. Also, Feeld can't figure out why he keeps hearing lines and seeing the fictional characters from his latest screenplay, "Karaoke." He tells his trusted agent, Ben Baglin, about these weird visions but Baglin doesn't believe him and feels that there is just too much stress in Feeld's life, not to mention his recent overindulgence in alcohol. Feeld is told by his producer, Anna Griffiths, that Nick Balmer, the wealthy director of "Karaoke," wants to change part of Feeld's script. Feeld already feels animosity toward Nick and this news outrages him more. While having dinner with Anna, Feeld glances at another table in the restaurant and again hears the two people speaking lines from his play. He is fascinated by the female character and after the dinner is over, he follows her down the street to find out just what is going on in his head. Anna is disturbed about Feeld's behavior and goes to Ben to find out just what is happening to Feeld. The woman Feeld follows, Sandra Sollars, works in a club owned by Arthur "Pig" Mailion, a gangster who is also a character in "Karaoke." Sandra is confused and curious how Feeld knows so much about her, and insists he tells her what is going on. Feeld becomes worked-up trying to explain everything to Sandra and passes out at the club. The two miniseries, collectively, are the late Dennis Potter's final work and were co-produced and telecast, at Potter's behest, by both the BBC and Channel 4. "Cold Lazarus" is part of the Museum's collection. See T:43601 through T:43604.)
