HEY, HEY, IT'S THE MONKEES (TV)
Summary
This variety special reunites the 1960s television rock quartet, the Monkees. The program features comedy sketches and musical performances of classic Monkees hits and new songs from their recently released album, "JustUs." The program begins with the Monkees at home, preparing for an upcoming performance at an exclusive country club. As they gear up, they debate whether they should cultivate a new gimmick to increase their popularity. Mickey and Davy come up with various ideas, from elaborate costumes to vomiting on stage, while Mike argues that all they need is good music to please the crowd. Highlights of the program include the following: Mickey creates a special potion guaranteed to induce vomiting; Davy takes a tour through a refrigerator stocked with disturbing food items; the band performs "Circle Sky" on the beach and "You and I" in an ice rink, accompanied by a performing ice skater and a giant stuffed dog; Mike turns the Monkee-mobile into a low rider, complete with hydrolics and the capability to transport passengers to other dimensions; the band performs; and Mickey lectures a young couple on the dangers of kissing. Performances and scenes are regularly interrupted by stock footage of a lizard sunning on a rock and a broken laugh track.
When the band arrives at the country club, they are denied entrance by the security guard until Davy impersonates Ethel Merman. The Monkees are eager to play music from their new album, but the club manager and his daughter insist they play the old hits. The Monkees then perform a medley that includes: "Last Train to Clarksville," "I'm a Believer," "Pleasant Valley Sunday," and "Daydream Believer." The performance is punctuated with clips from their original television series. Includes commercials and promos. Commercials include Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Clairol and Antonio Sabato, Jr., for Baked Lays potato chips.
