LAW & ORDER {LAW AND ORDER}: I.D. (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramas that deals with the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of criminals. The first half of each episode concerns the police procedure that leads to the arrest of a suspect, while the second half covers the efforts of the district attorney to prosecute the case. This episode concerns the discovery of a nude female corpse in the elevator of an office building. Detectives Briscoe and Curtis finally identify the victim as Joanne Dunbar, through her sister Lucy, who is in New York on vacation from Indiana. According to Lucy, the two sisters weren't close, but Joanne surprised her at her hotel room, stayed with her for a few days, and then disappeared. Briscoe and Curtis discover that Joanne and her husband, Billy Dunbar, were wanted for fraud in connection with Atlantic City casino scams. Searching Dunbar's apartment, they find the murder weapon as well as a photo of him and Lucy together. When Mr. Wilkins, the building superintendent, confirms that Lucy was seen with Dunbar, Assistant District Attorneys McCoy and Ross theorize that Lucy is in fact Joanne masquerading as her sister, and has killed the real Lucy in order to escape from the dangers she faces as a con artist on the run. The prosecution runs into trouble, though, when the judge in this trial, Nathan Parks, retaliates against Ross's in-court rebuke against his sexual innuendoes by fining her for contempt and by refusing to admit a witness who can identify Lucy Sullivan as really being Joanne Dunbar. Parks declares a mistrial, but the prosecution successfully lobbies for an appeal. However, Judge Parks interferes once again by placing McCoy under arrest for contempt when he objects to Parks's altering his decision about certain admissible evidence allowed in the trial. Finally, District Attorney Schiff steps in and arranges a hearing where Parks is taken off the case. In the end, the jury reaches a verdict, but not until after McCoy and Ross suffer the indignation of a vindictive and not impartial judge. Commercials deleted.
