HUGHLEYS, THE: UP ON THE ROOF {SEASON ONE FINALE} (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about the Hughleys, a black family that moves to the white suburbs. In this episode, the season one finale, Darryl grills for Yvonne and the Rogers, with disastrous results. The next day at work, Darryl learns that Milsap spent the weekend out of town with Regina. Then, Darryl's number one competitor calls to make an offer to Milsap. Darryl half-heartedly negotiates with Milsap to improve his job benefits. Milsap then reveals that other companies are offering him better deals. Back home, Yvonne worries about impending brushfires and practices fire drills with Sydney and Michael. Later, Milsap arrives to regretfully inform Darryl that he has to take a "damn good" job offer from a competitor unless Darryl can match it. Darryl tells Milsap that he is nothing more than a "follower" and doesn't deserve a raise. A furious Milsap storms out as Darryl calls him "a traitor ... a Judas, and ... a black Benedict Arnold." The next day, Darryl tells Yvonne that he has to figure out who can replace the "snake" Milsap as his sales manager. That day, Darryl realizes he has no one to fill Milsap's shoes, though Milsap hopes they can remain friends. Darryl tells Milsap that if he exits the office with his contact numbers, he'll never talk to him again. Milsap won't be intimidated and walks out. Meanwhile, the wildfire "jumps" the canyon and the Hughleys and their neighbors are told to evacuate. However, Darryl refuses to leave his beautiful house, standing on the roof with a hose to fight the fire. Then, Milsap arrives to help his old buddy. On the roof, Darryl apologizes to Milsap and offers to let him write his own contract if he will just come back to work. Milsap has no sooner agreed then Dave pops up to tell them that the wind has changed and the houses are safe. Finally, the whole gang joins the threesome as all sing a few choruses of "Up on the Roof." Includes commercials and the first minute of the program which follows, "Spin City."
