MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SEMINAR SERIES, THE: FREAKS AND GEEKS: THE SIX UNAIRED EPISODES {PUBLIC SHORT VERSION}

Summary

One in this series of seminars conducted by The Museum of Television & Radio. Held at the Museum of Television & Radio in Los Angeles, and moderated by Los Angeles Museum Vice-President and Director Steven A. Bell, this seminar examines "Freaks and Geeks," a short-lived comedy/drama series set in a high school in 1980 Michigan. There are only two official panelists on the show: co-creators and multi-hyphenates Judd Apatow and Paul Feig. Several of the show's cast members, writers, and directors, however, also end up answering a number of the audience's questions from their seats in the auditorium. After Bell's brief introduction, Apatow and Feig take the stage and express thanks to the many wildly enthusiastic fans who have traveled from all over the country to fill up the auditorium. They briefly discuss the disappointment that they are feeling over the show's recent cancellation, and Bell reappears to explain that the pair will return to answer questions after the screening of three episodes. When Apatow and Feig return, they ask the cast and crew present at the seminar to stand up and take a bow. Bell announces that some fans have brought Apatow and Feig a gift, and the fans approach the stage and present two souvenir-filled backpacks to the show's creators. Questions and answers concern NBC's decision to not air the tonally different third episode of the series; the casting process of the show; and the important role that the music of artists like Neil Young, the Grateful Dead, and the Who had on the show. Apatow and Feig take another break from speaking and show two more episodes. When they return, Apatow passes the microphone around to the cast and crew members of the show so that they can discuss either how they related to the character they were playing or which episode was their favorite. Director Jake Kasdan speaks, and cast members Joe Flaherty, Samm Levine, John Francis Daley, Martin Starr, Seth Rogan, Jason Segal, Busy Philipps, and Linda Cardellini all express their opinions. The seminar concludes with Apatow and Feig thanking everyone for being so supportive during the show's run and after its sudden cancellation.
