STRANGERS WITH CANDY: THE BLANK PAGE (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series that follows the exploits of Jerri Blank, a forty-six-year-old high-school freshman and self-described former "user, boozer, and loser." In this episode, Jerri's dream of joining the Flatpoint High cheerleading squad is crushed when a dark secret surfaces during her audition. "V-I-C-T-O-R-Y!" the cheerleading captain shouts at Jerri. "What's that spell?" The question completely stumps Jerri; she panics and is forced to admit that she is completely illiterate. Until this point, none of Jerri's teachers has caught on to her problem. When Mr. Noblet asks Jerri to read aloud from "Moby Dick," for example, he begins listening to a tiny hidden headset while she fabricates a story based on the book's cover painting of an old man and a whale. Principal Blackman is outraged when he hears of the cheerleading-auditions debacle, however, as an illiterate student will reflect badly on Flatpoint's reputation. He assigns Jerri to a schedule of after-school reading lessons from Mr. Noblet. The pair's relationship begins to mirror the story of Helen Keller and "The Miracle Worker" as Jerri struggles to pronounce the word "cat." Jerri befriends a man named Glen one day after school and discovers that the two have a good deal in common. Glen, it seems, dreams of being a school bus driver, but he doesn't know how to drive. Jerri and Glen decide to help encourage each other to make their respective dreams of reading and driving a reality. Commercials deleted.
