YANGNIU ZAI BEIJING {FOREIGN BABES IN BEIJING} {PT. 8
OF 20} {MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic series chronicling the love affairs of two American girls living in Beijing who become involved with the inhabitants of a traditional Chinese courtyard. In this episode, Louise, newly married to Tianliang, faces some challenges adapting to Chinese life in the courtyard with his family. Louise offers to help make steamed dumplings (jiaozi) with her sister-in-law, but she ends up putting too many in the pot, ruining them. Tianliang tells Louise not to worry, but when the jiaozi are served, Mr. Li criticizes them and Louise is embarrassed. When Mr. Li realizes Louise made the cooking mistake, however, he encourages the whole family to eat the jiaozi. Meanwhile, Jessie and Tianliang's brother Tianming, at Jessie's invitation, go to an ice sculpture exhibition. While they are enjoying themselves, Jessie suddenly confesses to Tianming that she likes him. Tianming tells Jessie that he already has a family and that in China husbands do not leave their wives, but he admits to Jessie that he does have mixed feelings for her. That night at the courtyard, Mr. Lu trips and falls, and Louise, Mr. Li, and Mrs. Li yell at Miss Ji because the steps were wet and unsafe. Miss Ji yells back and Louise threatens to call the police, but Miss Ji says that the police won't do anything since this isn't America. The next day, Louise goes to buy a birthday present for Mr. Li. At the market she sees Miss Ji who gives her advice about what to get Mr. Li. When Mr. Li returns home, Louise gives him her presents, a sweater and a clock. Mr. Li is appalled by the clock; Mrs. Li explains to Louise that, in Chinese tradition, giving a clock as a gift means you are counting down the time until you die. Louise apologizes and says that Miss Ji told her to get it. Mr. Li storms out to yell at Miss Ji for her cruelty, then Mrs. Li yells at Miss Ji for not showing respect to Mr. Li on his birthday. When Mr. and Mrs. Li and Louise return home with Mr. Li they realize that the sweater was really of very poor quality and has ripped. As the episode ends, Louise returns to the vendor where she bought the sweater and demands her money back. The vendor refuses, so Louise puts on the flawed sweater and dances around the stall showing the poor quality of the vendor's goods.
