ANDERSON COOPER 360: NEW ORLEANS MELTDOWN (TV)

Summary

Anderson Cooper hosts this in-depth look at national news stories and related features. This program takes place three days after Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana and Mississippi, focusing on the consequent devastation and rescue efforts. Cooper reports live from Waveland, Miss., 50 miles northeast of New Orleans. The first segment is a roundup of the last 24 hours in New Orleans, including reports on the following: pleas for food and medical help from survivors, looting and violence on the streets, overwhelmed hospitals, a busload of refugees arriving in Houston, Texas, and Mayor Ray Nagin asking for federal assistance. CNN correspondent Chris Lawrence reports from a rooftop in New Orleans, where he is barricaded with a group of policemen. CNN correspondent Ed Henry offers a report on the history of flooding in New Orleans, going back to a flood that killed 200 in 1927. Cooper interviews Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and takes her to task after she praises politicians for their assistance. Cooper instead asks her to comment on the anger of residents who witnessed a woman's corpse left on the street for 48 hours and was subsequently eaten by rats. Cooper then interviews the parents of a sick baby who had been left in a New Orleans hospital and was relocated. The parents express their joy at having just tracked down the baby at a facility in Fort Worth, Texas. CNN correspondent Kathleen Koch, a former resident of Waveland, reports on her own turmoil after touring what's left of her old haunts. Cooper observes as other residents witness the debris that was once their home. Cooper then interviews the director of the Army National Guard about future assistance. CNN correspondent Rick Sanchez reports on water rescues in New Orleans conducted on small boats by members of California-based recovery units. CNN correspondent Gary Tuchman reports on a man who rode out the storm at sea in his shrimp fishing boat. Paula Zahn then provides her comments on the devastation as "Paula Zahn Now" begins. Tape ends abruptly. This program is closed-captioned. Includes commercials.
