CBS NEWS SPECIAL REPORT: THE WORLD OF CHARLIE COMPANY (TV)

Summary

This program features a view of the war in Vietnam as seen from the perspective of Charlie Company, a cavalry unit with whom correspondent John Laurence spent three months in the field. Laurence explains the ongoing conflict between "lifers" (Army professionals) and draftees. Additionally, he covers the crisis that develops when soldiers disobey their new leader, Al Rice, who has ordered them to travel down an open road they believe to be dangerous. Others profiled include former nature lover PFC. Dudley, who now hates the outdoors; medic Richard Howe, who abhors killing; and Glen Hindley, who refuses to shoot his gun. The company's mission into Cambodia is noted. The program concludes with a poem about Charlie Company. Includes commercials.
