BEL AIR FIRE, THE (1961) {KTLA} (TV)
Summary
The catastrophic Bel Air fire of 1961 engulfed 456 homes at a property loss of close to $100 million. The KTLA news squad was on the scene for a two-day vigil. The KTLA telecopter spent a total of eighteen hours and thirty-five minutes in the air, setting a record. Two remote trucks and KTLA's Special Remote Unit -- a souped-up, converted station wagon -- were on hand to broadcast a total of thirty-eight segments from the fire, with live coverage that extended up to twelve-hour stretches. All commercials were pre-empted. A resolution of thanks from the Los Angeles City Council, and commendations from Governor Pat Brown and Mayor Yorty were bestowed on KTLA for the station's tireless efforts and selfless assistance in combating a disaster.
