Summary
This program features the closing ceremonies of this special Liberty Weekend celebration. Highlights include: speeches by singer Kenny Rogers; David L. Wolper, chairman and executive producer of Liberty Weekend; Lee Iacocca, chairman of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation; a representative of the Statue of Liberty repair workers, Robert Kearney; and actress Elizabeth Taylor. Performance highlights include John Williams' "Liberty Fanfare" by the Statue of Liberty All-American Marching Band; Rogers singing "Through the Years"; Willie Nelson singing "The Promise Land" and Nelson and Rogers collaborating on "You Are So Beautiful"; and the Liberty Dance Corps, the Liberty Drill Team, the Grand Guards of the Republic of France, the Statue of Liberty All-American Marching Band, and the Liberty Gospel Choir; performances by the Statue of Liberty All-American Marching Band, the Manhattan Transfer, Gerry Mulligan and Buddy DeFranco ("Of Thee I Sing"), Fabian ("Turn Me Loose"), Frankie Avalon ("Venus"), Bobby Rydell ("Volare"), the Temptations, the Four Tops, Liberty square dance caller Bill Heyman, Waylon Jennings ("America"), the Liberty Gospel Choir, Billy Preston, Patti LaBelle, and others. Includes a commercial for Wrangler with Willie Nelson; a speech by Vice President George Bush. Program highlights include performances by Shirley MacLaine ("Hooray for Hollywood"); the Pointer Sisters; the Liberty Tappers; Liza Minnelli ("New York, New York"); Charlton Heston and Cicely Tyson, who each give a dramatic exposition of the theme "What America Is to Me"; and others. In other highlights, Gene Kelly performs a portion of the song "Singing in the Rain" and is shown in a clip from the film, and Fred Astaire is shown in a clip from the film "Top Hat."
