IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA {THE BARBER OF SEVILLE} {TAPE
1 OF 2} (TV)

Summary

Tape one of two. This performance of Rossini's "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" was filmed live in three acts at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. The lively overture, originally composed for another Rossini work, "L'Equivoco stravagante," sets the playful mood for the work. Act I begins at dawn in the square fronting Doctor Bartolo's house in Seville. Bartolo plans to marry his ward, Rosina, but lately she has been courted by Count Almaviva, who she believes is a student, Lindoro. Almaviva's servant, Fiorello, marshals a band of musicians under Rosina's window, and the count serenades her with "Ecco ridente in cielo." Afterwards, Fiorello pays the musicians and leaves the count to watch for Rosina. The town barber, Figaro, enters singing "Largo al factotum," in which he boasts of his indispensability in intrigues and affairs throughout the town. He and the count recognize each other, and for the right price Figaro agrees to use his knowledge to help Almaviva win Rosina. At that moment, Bartolo leaves to arrange the upcoming nuptials, locks up Rosina, and tells his servant Ambrogio to guard her while he's away. Rosina drops a rose to Almaviva, whereupon he serenades her again, this time singing "Se il mio nome saper" while Figaro accompanies him on the guitar. Meanwhile, Figaro hatches a plan to gain entry to the house and convinces the count to disguise himself as a drunken soldier billeted there. Continues with T86:1535.
