AMERICAN PLAYHOUSE: CONCEALED ENEMIES, PART 1: SUSPICION (TV)

Summary

Part one of four. One in this dramatic anthology series. This docudrama deals with the actual events of the Alger Hiss spy case and examines the role played by Whittaker Chambers, the man whose accusations brought Hiss down. Set in the Cold War era, this drama also provides an incisive portrait of the times that produced the House Committee on Un-American Activities and vaulted the young Richard Nixon to national attention. In this part, Chambers voluntarily testifies before the House Committee on Un-American Activities, stating his involvement with the Communist Party ten years earlier and providing the committee with a list of names of alleged Communists. Among those named is Hiss, president of the prestigious Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Hiss appears before the committee and denies the charges, but Nixon, a congressional committee member, insists on pursuing the issue and begins to build a case against Hiss. Chambers and Hiss are brought together in a private meeting of the committee at the Commodore Hotel in New York. Hiss loses his temper and challenges Chambers to make his accusations publicly, outside the committee, where he will have no immunity and can be sued for libel. Continues with T88:0239.
