JACK AND MIKE: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The premiere in this drama series about the adventures of a fashionable professional couple living in Chicago -- Jackie is a popular columnist at the "Mirror," and Mike is a well-known restaurateur. In this episode, both husband and wife are consumed with their careers as Mike prepares to open a new restaurant, and Jackie gets involved in a rape case in which it is unclear whether the convicted man is actually guilty. The program opens as a woman named Ann Pulaski is abducted and violated on her way home from church. Later, Ann's description of the rapist's car leads the police to Chris Sykes, who is arrested and brought to trial. While Chris is awaiting sentencing, he and his wife ask Jackie for her help in a final effort to clear his name. Although Chris has lost his job and is condemned throughout Chicago, Jackie begins to believe in his innocence after meeting with the couple. She decides to investigate his story, and she goes out on a limb by writing a controversial article about Chris's possible innocence. Meanwhile, Mike is working on a new restaurant with an all-American 1950s theme, and he becomes increasingly anxious as he assembles the final details and prepares for the grand opening. To make matters worse, as Jackie delves further into Chris Sykes's case, she and Mike begin to receive threats trying to prevent her from uncovering any more information about the rape case. The threats only make Jackie more determined to discover the truth and save an innocent man from being sent to jail, however. The situation comes to a head on the opening night of Mike's new restaurant, when an informer comes to him with an important clue, and Jackie learns of the larger scheme behind the Pulanski rape case.
