CIVIL WAR, THE, EPISODE 3: FOREVER FREE (1862) (TV)

Summary

The third episode of this nine-episode documentary about the American Civil War, narrated by David McCullough. Subtitles include "Stonewall," "The Beast," "The Seven Days," "Kiss Daniel for me," "Saving the Union," "Antietam," and "The Higher Object." Experts who appear include writer Shelby Foote, historians Barbara Fields and Ed Bearss, and journalist William Safire. Events covered in this installment include Stonewall Jackson's Shenandoah Valley Campaign; the Battle of Fair Oaks, where Commander Joseph Johnston was injured and passed on his duties to Robert E. Lee; and the Battles of the Seven Days, Second Manassas, and Antietam. President Abraham Lincoln's (Sam Waterston) struggle to find competent leadership for the Union army continues as he replaces George McClellan with John Pope, replaces Pope with McClellan, until he finally relieves McClellan of his post permanently, replacing him with Ulysses S. Grant. Included are profiles of Stonewall Jackson, Gen. Benjamin F. Butler, Joe Hooker, Clara Barton, Ambrose Burnside, and Joshua L. Chamberlain. Other topics include discussion on the changing character of war itself as the increasingly bloody battles and loss of men affect American towns; Lincoln's need to change Union tactics as European forces threaten to intervene on the South's behalf; the morale of the Union forces deteriorates without a clear cause; the Unuon's increasingly uncertain chances for victory; Lincoln's colonization policy towards freed slaves before he passes the Emancipation Proclamation; Gen. Benjamin "Beast" Butler's actions as the appointed military governor of occupied New Orleans; reactions of the residents of that city; the resulting General Order No. 28 decreeing that any woman treating Union officers or soldiers with contempt would be treated "as a woman of the town plying her avocation''; and Mathew Brady's New York photo exhibition on "The Dead at Antietam." The program concludes with the passing of the Emancipation Proclamation; its effect on the war and the people of America is discussed. The Proclamation and a portion of Lincoln's speech before Congress are read by Waterston.
