AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, THE: ERIC SEVAREID'S "NOT SO WILD A DREAM" (TV)
Summary
One in this documentary series. Hosted by David McCullough, this program offers a portrait of the life and career of broadcast journalist Eric Sevareid. Based on his autobiography, "Not So Wild a Dream -- A Personal Memoir," the program features Sevareid recalling details of his life from his childhood growing up in North Dakota to his early career as a journalist on several dailies and later as a radio reporter for CBS during World War II. He talks at length about his assignment in Europe and his intrigue with the subject of fascism, which led him and his wife to travel to Germany to "experience the Third Reich." Among the other topics discussed are his first experience with journalism as editor of his high-school newspaper; his 2,000-mile canoe trip from Minneapolis to the Hudson Bay; his active participation in student movements while attending the University of Minnesota; a short stint with a Minnesota daily from which he was fired for exposing the activities of a Nazi group; his work for the Paris edition of the Herald Tribune, for which he wrote about Nazi Germany; his travels to Germany and his impressions of the country and its people; the beginning of his association with CBS in 1939; and recollections of the early events he covered during World War II.
