PERRY COMO'S FRENCH CANADIAN CHRISTMAS {DEBBY BOONE, DOROTHY HAMILL, DIANE TELL} (TV)

Summary

This televised Christmas special, filmed in Quebec, features the music of Perry Como and a number of guests. The program begins as Como and several others sing a medley of songs, including "He is Born, The Divine Christ Child" and "Un flambeau, Jeanette, Isabella," after which Como sings "Do You Hear What I Hear?" solo. He is joined by singer Debby Boone, and they reenact a 17th-century scene in which Boone sings "Wonderful, Wonderful Day." A group of costumed singers perform the traditional "Alouette" in a processional, and Como and Boone sing "Married" from "Cabaret" and reprise "Wonderful, Wonderful Day." Como sings "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Forever," and the V'Là L'Bon Vent dance troupe performs "Un pays beau." Como chats with Canadian singer Diane Tell, who notes that Christmas Eve is her birthday, and she then performs her song "Si j'étais un homme" at a nightclub. Como and Tell then duet on "C'est si bon, c'est magnifique."

Pianist Andre Gagnon plays "Carol of the Bells," and he and Como are joined by several Canadian hockey players and ice skater Dorothy Hamill, and Gagnon plays an original number as Hamill skates. Como sings "White Christmas," followed by "Christ is Born" and "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" with the Mount Royal Conservatory kids' choir. Next, he explains that Canadian tradition involves awakening the children very early on Christmas morning after returning from midnight mass, and he and a large family celebrate with gifts and music, singing "Deck the Halls" all together. Como performs "Away in a Manger" with Boone and Tell performs "Silent Night" in French, and they all sing "O Come All Ye Faithful." Como closes the program with "O Holy Night," performed in a church featuring a nativity scene. Commercials deleted.
