TOM KEATING ON PAINTERS: TURNER (TV)
Summary
In this educational documentary, artist Tom Keating explores the work of watercolorist Joseph Mallord William Turner. First, Keating discusses Turner's formative years, his reputation as a genius of watercolors, and the reason people were eager to purchase Turner's works. Then, Keating speaks about Turner's painting, "The Fighting Temeraire," as he paints a reproduction of the great work -- in reverse. As Keating continues to paint, he explains why artists create reverse paintings and how Turner created the original work. As he speaks, Keating demonstrates the following artistic techniques: adding light to a painting; flattening areas of a painting; using a sponge; working with tempera; varnishing and glazing; the effects of adding the color red to a painting; and creating fine lines. In addition, the program includes three paintings: Henri Clemens van de Velde's "A Dutch Man of War," and Turner's "Helvoetsluys" and "The Fighting Temeraire."
