PLAYHOUSE 90: A MARRIAGE OF STRANGERS (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic anthology series. This drama centers around the first day of the married life of Jerry and Louise Shoemaker, a couple of lonely people who met at the Over 26 Friendship Club. Though they have heard so many stories about how awful married life can be, they fear spending the rest of their lives alone and have rushed into marriage after only three months of courtship. Both Jerry and Louise cut their workday short and meet at City Hall for their wedding ceremony, which is awkward and hurried; no friends or family members are in attendence. A surprise party awaits them at Louise's office, but her coworkers' jokes about the intimacy of marriage provoke an outburst of anger from Louise. The nervous newlyweds move on to their new apartment, where they are completely alone for the very first time, but neither one is quite sure of how to act or what to say. Various interruptions and inconveniences only serve to heighten the tension. As Jerry and Louise get a crash course in the ups and downs of marriage and family life from their new neighbors, both find themselves wondering whether their marriage was really meant to be. Includes commercials and promos.
