Summary
A three-hour special featuring coverage of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat's visit to Israel to speak with Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. The program opens with Walter Cronkite reporting from Jerusalem. Bert Quint reports on Sadat's trip through old Jerusalem followed by a clip of Cronkite's interview with Sadat during his trip to Israel. Cronkite and Bob Simon report from the Israeli Knesset at the opening of the official ceremonies, and Cronkite compares the backgrounds of Sadat and Begin. Itzhak Shamir, Knesset chairman, speaks, followed by Sadat's speech. Sadat discusses his decision to come to Israel, his hopes for peace, Egypt's responsibility, and his motivations for his trip.
Sadat discusses the opportunities for peace in the Middle East, the basic rights of the Palestinian peoples, and the confusion which met his decision to visit Israel. Begin speaks, saluting Sadat and discussing the prospects for peace in the Middle East, Israel as the Jewish homeland, and its history. He also extends an invitation to King Hussein of Jordan to visit Israel.
Shimon Peres, Labor Party chairman, speaks on the refugee problem. The Knesset adjourns, and Walter Cronkite reports on the meeting. Bob Simon analyzes the speeches and progress made. Richard C. Hottelet speaks with the U.N. observer for the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Zehdi Labib Terzi. Marvin Kalb speaks with Dr. Joseph Sisco, former Undersecretary of State for political affairs, followed by a clip of President Jimmy Carter commenting on the Sadat-Begin meeting. John Sheahan reports from Cairo on Egyptian reaction. Includes commercials.
