BARYSHNIKOV ON BROADWAY (TV)

Summary

This special musical presentation is a tribute to the American musical theater by Russian-born ballet star Mikhail Baryshnikov. He and his co-host, Liza Minnelli, travel back in time to review Broadway musicals of the past, beginning with Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein's "Oklahoma." Dressed as a cowboy, Baryshnikov joins a cast of dancers in performing to "Kansas City," "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top," and "Oklahoma." Baryshnikov then highlights the impact of black musicals, joining Nell Carter in singing and dancing to "Fats" Waller's "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Ain't Misbehavin'." Minnelli then sings "The Music that Makes Me Dance" from Jule Styne's "Funny Girl," and Baryshnikov joins her in singing and dancing to "Shall We Dance" from Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The King and I." Baryshnikov pays tribute to Frank Loesser's "Guys and Dolls" with a "gangster" dance routine performed to a medley of songs from the show. Minnelli and Baryshnikov then sing John Kander and Fred Ebb's "Showstoppers," and dance to Jerry Herman's "Hello, Dolly!" Minnelli follows their act with her rendition of "Big Spender" from Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields's "Sweet Charity," and both hosts do a song and dance routine to "Too Darn Hot" from Cole Porter's "Kiss Me, Kate." In the program's finale, Baryshnikov dons a top hat and tails, and joins the cast from Marvin Hamlisch's "A Chorus Line" in performing the song "One." Includes commercials and promos. Commercials include Fred Savage for IBM Corporation.
